Abisko is a village in Swedish Lapland on the south shore of Torneträsk, a lake about 70 km long. It lies close to 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, next to Abisko National Park. There are few lights for kilometres around, which is the main reason aurora watchers come.
Of the six places on Aurorix it is by far the smallest. That means the sky is dark from the doorstep, and it also means few services and nobody to turn the lights off for you. Plan food and transport before dark.
Where to watch
- The Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja is reached by chairlift from the Abisko Mountain Station and gives a view over Torneträsk from above the valley floor. Check opening times and book ahead, as access depends on the season.
- The shore of Torneträsk near the village has an open northern horizon over the water and needs no booking.
- Abisko National Park trails start 4 km west of the village. Walk only on paths you know and carry a headlamp: the hills are steep and the terrain is rough in the dark.
- Björkliden, a few kilometres west along the road and railway, looks over the lake from a different angle if cloud sits over the village.
Getting there and getting around
Daily SJ electric trains between Stockholm and the Norwegian city of Narvik stop at Abisko. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Kiruna, about 100 km to the east by road; Narvik is the closest town on the Norwegian side. Without a car you can still reach the Mountain Station and the lakeshore on foot, which is a real advantage over Tromsø or Reykjavik.
Local conditions
Abisko sits behind the Scandinavian Mountains and has a reputation for clearer skies than the Norwegian coast. Treat the reputation as a prior, not a promise: use the cloud tile and the hourly strip to see what the forecast says for the night you are there.
Winter cold is serious and the lake wind makes it worse. Phones and camera batteries lose charge quickly outdoors, so keep spares inside your jacket.
Reading the numbers for Abisko
Abisko is a high-latitude, low-light location, so it needs little geomagnetic activity. The facts table shows the Kp at which the oval reaches the village. Here the usual limit is the sky itself: darkness and cloud decide more nights than Kp does. The darkness table shows dark hours from September to early April on the 15th of each month.
